For those who caught on to Frank Zappa’s music after his untimely death, few experiences rivaled that of the Zappa Plays Zappa project. Led by Frank’s son Dweezil Zappa, the band name said it all, one Zappa playing the music of another.Only, there seems to be some contention over the use of the Zappa family name for the project. The Zappa Family Trust recently informed Dweezil that he did not have the rights to tour under the name Zappa Plays Zappa, as the last name is a trademark owned by the trust. Instead, the band will hit the road as Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa. In an interview with the New York Times, Dweezil says, “It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue… but this is being done under duress.” He added, “My last name is Zappa; my father was Frank Zappa… but I am not allowed to use the name on its own. I’m not allowed to use a picture of him. I’m not allowed to use my own connection with him without some sort of deal to be struck.”When Frank Zappa’s window Gail Zappa passed away, control of the Family Trust went to two of Zappa’s four children, Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa. While the other two, Dweezil and Moon Unit, remained beneficiaries, the relationship between the siblings has been riddled with contention. Ahmet addressed the Zappa Plays Zappa situation as well, saying “I am not standing in the way of Dweezil playing the music… he would just have to be in accordance with the family trust.”Dweezil gets the final word in the article, saying “I just hope people will understand that the only thing I’m changing is the name.” The Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa tour kicks off in July.[H/t The New York Times]
Last night, Buckethead brought his spring tour out to the famed Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA, delivering music that spans the prolific artist’s lengthy career. Most well known for his guitar playing (or is he most well known for the KFC bucket?), a video captured from the performance shows Buckethead let loose, by himself, on the bass. It’s no surprise that Buckethead is such a talented bassist, as his playing technique is impeccable on the guitar. Couple that with his unbelievable body of work recording with various instruments in the studio, and you have a undeniable recipe for a great solo. After he rocks the bass, Buckethead picks up the guitar and lets loose for a soaring instrumental.Watch the magic from last night’s show below, courtesy of Jim Croy.

The show marked a true highlight for this year’s Jam Cruise, and we are so happy they decided to release this video for the rest of the world to experience.Check out this pro-shot footage of Dr. John & The Night Trippers performing “Iko Iko” on below.Dr. John & The Nite Trippers – “Iko Iko” – Jam Cruise 14[Video: Jam Cruise]
Last night, AC/DC brought their run with vocalist Axl Rose to a close. The tour wound it’s way across the world before finishing up in Philadelphia, PA at the Wells Fargo Center, with Rose replacing long-time vocalist Brian Johnson after he was forced to retire due to his deteriorating hearing.Original rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young was also forced to retire earlier this year as he is battling a debilitating case of dementia. While the tour pushed on, bassist Cliff Williams announced back in July that he would be retiring at the end of this tour, with it not feeling right to go on with so many original members dropping out due to health reasons. With that in mind, last night in Philadelphia was Williams’ final show with the band.Anyone who has seen AC/DC knows that it is the Angus Young show, with his schoolboy outfit, energetic stage presence, and wild guitar playing. It proved a truly touching moment when Young walked Williams out to the front and center of the stage as the band rang out the final notes of “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)” in Philadelphia.See below for a HD video of “For Those About To Rock”, and watch as Angus Young salutes Cliff Williams during his final moments as a member of AC/DC:Video courtesy of YouTube user Jim Powers.
Cicada Rhythm just released a new music video for their tune, “Dirty Hound.” Directed by Dave Kirslis, the video depicts a dog houdini’s liberating escape attempt. The video winds through a pastoral countryside, the forest, and eventually the good dog finds himself behind the wheel of a beat-up old truck, ready to truly hit the road. After a brief run-in with his previous owner, let’s just say the video has a happy ending. The triumphant video matches the free energy of the track, and we’re all the better for watching it. You can check out the video for yourself below, and praise that good boy for bustin’ free of his chains.Cicada Rhythm just finished up dates with Dylan LeBlanc and Rising Appalachia. Shazam, the app that listens and recognizes what song is playing, has been a cutting-edge product since the company’s inception in 1999. The company’s widely useful and universally in-demand audio recognition technology has put them at the forefront of the space for years, and made Shazam one of the most popular apps in the world. To “Shazam” is now widely recognized and utilized as a verb in conversation.According to a report from TechCrunch, the British company is in the process of finalizing a deal to sell Shazam to U.S. tech giant Apple for sums estimated to be north of $400M. The move will allow Apple to further improve their music delivery capabilities and make for a more immersive listening experience for their customers. In recent years, the company has extended the technology beyond helping you remember “who sings that song that’s playing right now” It also integrates with other apps like Snapchat and Apple’s Siri, and it currently sends lots of traffic to other music apps like Spotify and Apple Music, which pay Shazam when those clicks convert to purchases. The Shazam app is now used as an interactive tool for advertisers, bars and restaurants, music venues and more. Shazam’s augmented reality brand marketing service lets you discover content based on pictures that you snap with the app. “You came for music, stay to experience McDonald’s Karaoke, MTN Dew VR Racing and much more,” is the company’s pitch on this feature. It’s not clear which of these operations will carry on post-acquisition, and which of these might be something that Apple would integrate into its own business (and how), but it’s notable that much of what Shazam does is very synergistic with what Apple apple already has in place and in the works. It’s likely that the technology will be used to attract more users to the Apple Music platform. This is not the first large-scale acquisition Apple has made in the music space in recent memory. In 2014, Apple acquired Beats for more than $3B, and absorbed Beats’ executive team–including Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and Trent Reznor–into the Apple family to continue pushing the limits of the product/service they created with the help of the tech monolith. Beats became the basis for Apple Music, which has roughly 30 million users as of this Fall (Spotify has 60 million paying customers, and 140 million overall). We are excited to see what the inventive minds at Apple will be able to think up to improve the music listening experience using Shazam’s unique technology.[via TechChrunch]
Trey Anastasio Trio has announced webcasts for all three of their upcoming sold-out performances at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans, LA via LivePhish. The highly anticipated three-night run will take place this week from Thursday, April 26th, to Saturday, April 28th, coinciding with the beginning of this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The trio—comprised of Trey Anastasio and his longtime solo bandmates Russ Lawton (drums) and Tony Markellis (bass)—is touring in place of the full Trey Anastasio Band while keyboardist Ray Paczkowski recovers after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor last month. You can trace the origins of the modern Trey Anastasio Band back to this trio of musicians. As Anastasio explained in a Facebook post announcing the Trey Anastasio Trio tour plans, the tour’s opening night, April 17th, 2018, marked the 20th anniversary of the first time Trey shared the stage with Tony and Russ, as part of a gig billed as 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes, which featured the debuts of “Sand”, “First Tube”, and “Mozambique”, among others. That core group–Trey Anastasio, Russ Lawton, and Tony Markellis–soon became the original iteration of the Trey Anastasio Band. The trio mounted their first full tour in May of 1999. That tour saw the birth of many of the songs that still make up TAB setlists to this day, with just Trey, Russ and Tony holding things down. The band (and the music) continued to evolve from there, with Trey going through a litany of lineup changes, additions, and evolutions over the years, eventually landing on the robust lineups we’ve seen in recent years. While the full Trey Anastasio Band will be back in due time, the opportunity to get a taste of this rare Trey Anastasio Trio tour from their couches.
