Albertas job numbers still strong as the nation struggles

by News Staff Posted Aug 8, 2014 1:30 pm MDT Canada’s job market continues to struggle, but Alberta is still strong.The national unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a point to 7.0 per cent for the month, as fewer people went looking for work. In Alberta the rate was 4.5 per cent.In Calgary the unemployment rate dropped slightly to 5.3 per cent.Alberta is the only province expected to see new job growth faster than 3.0 per cent for the year.Sal Guatieri, a senior economist with BMO, believes Alberta is bucking the trend.“Even though the province did lose about 5,000 jobs in July, employment is still up almost three per cent in the past year” he said. “That compares with very minimal gains in most other provinces and an outright decline in three”.Guatieri said one of the reasons for the stronger Alberta numbers is the amount of people moving here.He said as long as oil prices are strong, Alberta’s job numbers should be too.
