You Can Join an Urban Gardening Party This Month

Even if the fluctuating temperatures don’t feel like it, the first day of spring—March 20—approaches.Before you you start plotting out your garden for the season, consider soaking in some valuable planting knowledge at an upcoming urban gardening party. This year, the 42nd annual Gardeners’ Gathering kicks off springtime planting on March 18. The free celebration is open to gardening novices and masters alike.Presented by the Trustees and the City of Boston, the Gardeners’ Gathering is Boston’s largest educational forum for urban gardeners. It promotes healthy practices for urban gardens with a day of workshops, discussions, and exhibitions. This year’s workshop lineup includes “Mushroom Cultivation,” “Tomatoes in Focus,” “Backyard Chickens,” and “Urban Beekeeping.”The event, which brings together more than 400 local gardeners, will take place at Northeastern University’s Shillman Hall and the Egan Center.“The Gathering provides an opportunity for our gardening experts, partners, community gardeners, and all who are interested in sharing tips and techniques for successful, sustainable growing practices to come together and celebrate the power of community gardening,” says Trustees President and CEO Barbara Erickson.Mayor Marty Walsh will make an appearance at the gathering to present the Annual Community Garden Awards. (These include “Rookie Gardener of the Year” and “Most Valuable Gardener.”) The event will also host an address by food justice activist LaDonna Redmond called “Food and Justice: Feeding ourselves in uncertain times.”Free, Saturday, March 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Shillman Hall at Northeastern University, 115 Forsyth Street, Boston, thetrustees.org.
