Musical training in childhood can help one develop better language processing skills, reports a news item on EurekAlert. Scientists at Northwestern University found that English-speaking adults who had musical training were better able to track intonations of Chinese tonal words than those who did not have such training. The study contradicted an evolutionary assumption about the brain stem. “An old structure from an evolutionary standpoint, the brainstem once was thought to only play a passive role in auditory processing,” the article states. “We’ve found that by playing music — an action thought of as a function of the neocortex — a person may actually be tuning the brainstem,” said Nina Kraus, one of the team publishing their results in Nature Neuroscience. “This suggests that the relationship between the brainstem and neocortex is a dynamic and reciprocal one and tells us that our basic sensory circuitry is more malleable than we previously thought.”Do your brain a favor and learn to appreciate good music. Don’t deprive children of the opportunity to learn how to develop a God-given capacity that enriches life. (High-decibel repetitious raunchy cacophony excluded.) Did you notice that evolutionary theory failed another prediction again? (03/08/2007).(Visited 6 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

Disney Star Wars Director Ron Howard, who took over after the original directors left, had already noticed how Solo was catching on after its digital release in September. He tweeted about how the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes audience score was creeping higher. All the Star Wars movies, from the cheesy to great, ranked Solo wasn’t a box-office hero but it still earned a lot of fan love. Walt Disney Pictures/Lucasfilm Solo: A Star Wars Story arrived in May 2018 and quickly became the lowest-grossing Star Wars film in recent memory. But sometimes bummers turn into runners. A year later, Star Wars fans are rallying for a sequel to young Han Solo’s story. Box Office Mojo shows Solo pulled in under $400 million worldwide. Compare that with The Last Jedi in 2017, which banked over $1.3 billion. It’s no wonder Disney didn’t rush in with sequel plans. Some fans attributed the poor showing to the marketing campaign or fan anger over the events of The Last Jedi. As it turns out, Solo was a fun romp of a film with engaging performances from Alden Ehrenreich in the lead role, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. The hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen hit the trending charts on Twitter on Thursday with a push from Star Wars News Net and its Resistance Broadcast podcast. TV and Movies Star Wars fans were ready to get on board, tweeting their support for a movie sequel or a streaming series on Disney Plus. 1:18 Now playing: Watch this: These guidelines can help you pick the perfect frames. Franziska & Tom Werner / Getty Images Scenario: You’re walking through LensCrafters after your latest eye exam. It’s time to get some new frames. Pair after pair, you look in the mirror and immediately put them back on the rack. Why do these frames look so great on the models but you look like you’re playing dress-up with grandma’s accessories? If you wear glasses, that scenario may elicit some familiar feelings of frustration. But don’t feel bad, because those models were expertly fitted for glasses based on their face shape — and you can have the same luxury. Knowing the basics of face shape and understanding your shape can make choosing glasses much easier (not to mention much more fun). There’s one important truth about face shapes, though: Almost no one actually embodies a perfect square, diamond, heart, oval or round face. Instead, many people have features from multiple face shapes, and these face-shape categories act as a general guide for choosing accessories. The key is determining which category sounds most like you, which can change over time. And if you like the way a certain frame looks on you, even if it’s not one of the “best” for your face shape, own it. Your style is yours, and you aren’t limited to any rule book. That said, here are the basics of five main face shapes and how to choose flattering glasses frames for each. These tips even work if you’re searching for glasses online! Learn more: How to find your glasses prescription without going to the eye doctor Glasses for round facesEven as adults, most people have at least one friend or family member who still has a cute “baby face” with plump cheeks. Except that’s no baby face — just a round face. Round faces feature soft curves, smooth lines and a fullness that tends to make people look younger than they actually are. If that’s you, go for frames that offset the uniformity of your face shape and add a subtle sharpness: Bold, angular or upswept glasses that highlight the eyes and cheekbones work the best for round faces. The best frame shapes for round faces: RectangleSquareCat eyeD-frameGlasses for oval facesPeople with oval faces kind of struck genetic gold when it comes to glasses — just about any frames look great on this oblong shape. Many people consider an oval face shape as the most balanced, because it features cheekbones just slightly wider than the forehead and jaw, making the entire face really proportionate. Oval faces can pull off bold frame shapes, but are usually better off steering clear of any super narrow frames. For the best look, choose a pair that are as wide as or slightly wider than the broadest part of your face. The best frame styles for oval faces: WayfarerSquareRoundHornOvalGlasses for square facesSquare faces feature a strong jaw and broad forehead: The width at the top and bottom of the face are nearly equal. The length of the face also nearly equals the width, which is where this robust face shape gets its name. The best glasses for square faces sit high on the nose and add length. Usually, square faces look better with rounded frames rather than angular ones, as square faces already boast their own strong angles. To make your face look thinner or longer, choose a frame wider than the broadest part of your face. The best frame shapes for square faces: OvalRoundRounded Wayfarer Glasses for heart-shaped facesA heart-shaped face usually features one sweeping curve from the forehead to the jaw. Widest at the brow and gradually narrows, the jaw is the narrowest point of the face. Characterized by prominent cheekbones and a pointed chin, heart-shaped faces can be long or round. When it comes to glasses, heart-shaped faces are pretty versatile, but frames that aren’t oversized or full of design elements usually work best. The best frame shapes for heart-shaped faces: Rounded WayfarerSquareRounded squareOvalGlasses for diamond-shaped facesAnother dramatic face shape, diamond-shaped faces are narrowest at the forehead and jawline, with broad (and often high) cheekbones. Try frames that have a lot of design elements at the top or that have bold browlines, as frames that accentuate the brow and temples help even out the angles of diamond-shaped faces. Explore further © 2010 PhysOrg.com More information: Host and viral ecology determine bat rabies seasonality and maintenance, PNAS, Published online before print June 6, 2011, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1010875108AbstractRabies is an acute viral infection that is typically fatal. Most rabies modeling has focused on disease dynamics and control within terrestrial mammals (e.g., raccoons and foxes). As such, rabies in bats has been largely neglected until recently. Because bats have been implicated as natural reservoirs for several emerging zoonotic viruses, including SARS-like corona viruses, henipaviruses, and lyssaviruses, understanding how pathogens are maintained within a population becomes vital. Unfortunately, little is known about maintenance mechanisms for any pathogen in bat populations. We present a mathematical model parameterized with unique data from an extensive study of rabies in a Colorado population of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) to elucidate general maintenance mechanisms. We propose that life history patterns of many species of temperate-zone bats, coupled with sufficiently long incubation periods, allows for rabies virus maintenance. Seasonal variability in bat mortality rates, specifically low mortality during hibernation, allows long-term bat population viability. Within viable bat populations, sufficiently long incubation periods allow enough infected individuals to enter hibernation and survive until the following year, and hence avoid an epizootic fadeout of rabies virus. We hypothesize that the slowing effects of hibernation on metabolic and viral activity maintains infected individuals and their pathogens until susceptibles from the annual birth pulse become infected and continue the cycle. This research provides a context to explore similar host ecology and viral dynamics that may explain seasonal patterns and maintenance of other bat-borne diseases. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. George conducted a five year field study looking at big brown bats from Colorado. Using data from the study and a mathematical model, the team looked at the incubation period of the virus and the bats hibernation period and determined that three main factors play a role in the survival of the bats. The three factors are a long viral incubation period, the bat’s hibernation, and a large supply of newborn bats in the spring and summer.According to the study, an infected bat will enter into hibernation. This hibernation period slows the body’s metabolism and thus slows the progression of the rabies. This insures that the bat and the virus do not die during this period of time. When spring arrives and hibernation is over, the bats then roost and give birth to their young. This takes place in large colonies, creating a breeding ground for the virus. With numerous bats in one area grooming and nipping at each other, it creates a perfect environment for the virus to spread. When compared to data provided from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on rabies peaks and juvenile deaths in the summer, the teams model seems to hold true. The model also shows that if hibernation were to be taken out of the picture, the virus and the bats would go extinct. When this molecule gets transformed by microbes in the gut, it enables the muscle cells to protect themselves against ageing and also increases the muscle mass.As we age, our cells increasingly struggle to recycle the mitochondria and are no longer able to carry out their vital function and thus gets accumulated in the cell. This degradation affects the health of many tissues, including muscles, which gradually weaken over the years and leads to age-related various diseases. Urolithin A has been found to re-establish the cell’s ability to recycle the components of the defective mitochondria. “It’s the only known molecule that can relaunch the mitochondrial clean-up process, otherwise known as mitophagy,” said Patrick Aebischer, President, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne– a research institute in Switzerland. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“It’s a completely natural substance, and its effect is powerful and measurable,” Aebischer added. For the study, the team tested their hypothesis on the nematode C.elegans – roundworm – which is considered elderly, after just 8-10 days. The lifespan of worms exposed to Urolithin A increased by more than 45 per cent compared with the control group. In the rodent studies, older mice, around two years of age, exposed to Urolithin A showed 42 per cent better endurance while running than equally old mice in the control group. Pomegranate itself doesn’t contain the miracle molecule, but rather its precursor. Depending on the species of animal and the flora present in the gut microbiome, the amount of urolithin A produced can vary.
